6 Beautiful Destinations to Visit This Fall

October is one of the most enjoyable times to explore Japan. With refreshing autumn breezes and crisp, comfortable weather, it’s the perfect season to get outside and discover the country.  From colorful fall foliage and seasonal flavors to scenic landscapes and photogenic destinations, Japan offers plenty of ways to enjoy the beauty of autumn.
If you're planning a trip to Japan this fall, here are six destinations to add to your itinerary!

1. Koya Pond, Myoko, Niigata

Koya Pond is a spectacular destination for autumn foliage. It was also selected by CNN as one of the 31 Most Beautiful Places in Japan.  From late September through October, the wetlands surrounding the pond transform into vibrant shades of autumn color. With its breathtaking scenery, the area is often described as a “heavenly paradise.”  For panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, don’t miss Koya Hut, a mountain lodge located along the edge of the Koya Pond wetlands.
Prefecture: Niigata

2. Lake Chuzenji, Nikko, Tochigi

Located in Chugushi, Nikko City, Lake Chuzenji is Japan’s highest-elevation natural lake.  Situated at the gateway to Oku-Nikko, the lake is one of Japan’s top destinations for autumn foliage. The famous Irohazaka Winding Road, which connects central Nikko with Lake Chuzenji, is another popular spot for enjoying the spectacular colors of the season. The autumn foliage typically reaches its peak around mid-October.
And while you're in Nikko, don't miss the area's local cuisine. Warm bowls of Yuba Soba, as well as Nikko Soba served with seasonal vegetables and mushrooms, are perfect for a cool autumn day.
Prefecture: Tochigi

3. Matsushima, Miyagi

Matsushima in Miyagi Prefecture is one of Japan’s Three Most Scenic Views, famous for its breathtaking scenery and picturesque landscape.  It is also a popular destination for enjoying fresh oysters. Oyster season generally runs from November through March, but October is an ideal time to visit as the season is just beginning to get into full swing.
Several shops operate throughout the year, while some oyster huts open early in the season. That makes October a great time to enjoy freshly harvested, delicious oysters while experiencing Matsushima’s beautiful autumn scenery.

Prefecture: Miyagi

4. Tottori Sand Dunes, Tottori

Known as one of the largest sand dune landscapes in Japan, the Tottori Sand Dunes offer a completely different autumn experience.  As the intense summer heat gives way to cooler temperatures and refreshing breezes, autumn is an especially pleasant season to explore the dunes on foot.  It’s also one of the best times to see fumon, beautiful wave-like patterns naturally formed on the surface of the sand by the wind.  Take a walk across the vast dunes and enjoy a unique side of Japan’s autumn scenery.
Prefecture: Tottori

5. Hitachi Seaside Park, Ibaraki

Located in Hitachinaka City, Hitachi Seaside Park is a beautiful destination where seasonal flowers bloom throughout the year.  In October, the park enters its colorful autumn season as its adorable, fluffy kochia plants gradually turn a brilliant shade of red.  One of the park’s must-see sights is the colorful combination of red kochia and pink cosmos flowers. Together, they create a stunning contrast that makes this a particularly photogenic autumn destination.
Prefecture: Ibaraki

6. Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields, Hakone

The Sengokuhara Susuki Grass Fields are one of Hakone’s most iconic autumn sights.  The best time to visit is typically from early October through early November. A walking trail winds through the grassland, offering visitors the chance to enjoy a refreshing stroll surrounded by tall susuki grass and the crisp autumn breeze.  If you're looking for a peaceful way to experience the season, a walk through Sengokuhara is a beautiful addition to a Hakone trip.
